Project leader: Prof. dr. Gilles van Wezel
As the largest source of antibiotics, the filamentous soil bacteria of the family of actinomycetes are exceptional industrial microorganisms, and a major asset in combating multiple drug-resistant pathogens. The GenExpand project aims to identify antibiotics that have so far gone unnoticed, by combining full genome sequencing to identify hidden antibiotic clusters with the development of bioessays and chemical tweezers for the idenitification of specific classes of natural products. Within the project lantibiotics are a focal point. At the same time GenExpand will form a broad-impact benchmark for future antibiotic research by augmenting the available genome sequences of antibiotic-producing actinomycetes and by offering new technologies for compound identification
