Project 10469: AntiBioScreen - Antimicrobial discovery in filamentous fungi

With the slow progression of new antibiotics entering the market, bacterial (multi-) resistance against the currently used antibiotics in the clinic has become a major problem in controlling infectious diseases. This urges the need for the discovery of new antibiotics, preferentially the ones that are based on novel chemical structures. This project will use novel post-genomic strategies in antibiotics discovery tapping the genomes of filamentous fungi for gene clusters encoding secondary metabolites with antimicrobial activity.
